Job Summary Responsible for direction of patient care that promotes safety and well-being of patients in the Surgical Services environment on a 24 hour basis. Plans, coordinates, and evaluates the overall clinical nursing practice and administrative activities. Participates in development of hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Manages the following departments: Outpatient Surgery, Operating Room, Central Sterilization, Endoscopy, PACU, OR Purchasing/Material Management. Consults with staff, physicians and Nurse Executive on nursing issues and interpretation of hospital policies to ensure patient needs are met. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in PI activities, and Strategic Planning. Formulates budget for department. Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of JCAHO standards

  • Provides and controls supplies and equipment needed for successful operation of the Surgical Services Department. Directs and delegates control of inventories to ensure proper amounts available.

  • Manages/Supervises and oversees sterilization process.

  • Supervises and oversees all areas of the Surgical Services, including, Central Sterilization, Surgical Suite, PACU, Outpatient Surgery, Endoscopy and anesthesia tech.

  • Directs safety measures to prevent accidents, harm or injury in any way to patient, staff or equipment

  • Assists surgeons in operations through provision of qualified staff; formulates schedule that provides staff available for all procedures.

  • Assures presence of RN circulator and PACU nurses for all cases.

  • Assigns personnel, delegates specific duties and tasks.

  • Verifies that narcotics and controlled substances are counted and locked, per hospital policy

  • Evaluates needs for new or different items in regard to present and new trends or needs of the department.

  • Delegates; reviews performance improvement monitoring; analyzes and evaluates Surgical Services Department to improve nursing care.

  • Participates in planning Surgical Services Department budget and appropriately ensures the number of FTE’S to meet needs of the department.

  • Provides in-services on a regular basis, and when new equipment or procedures are implemented.

  • Provides/ensures orientation for new staff members

  • Demonstrates knowledge of nursing theory and management

  • Conducts regular staff meetings.

  • Ensures payroll is accurately completed as required.

  • Completes other duties as assigned by Nurse Executive, within the Board of Registered Nurses scope of nursing practice.

  • Participates in strategic planning and PI activities

  • Timely performance evaluations are conducted with all employees according to hospital policy.

  • Provides mechanism for the ongoing review of departmental policies and procedures that meets the JCAHO standards.

  • Attends a minimum of 75% of Department Head meetings per year.

  • Attends or assigns Surgical Services representation at the following meetings: Surgical Committee, Clinical Management, Department Head, Infection Control and Safety.

    Position Qualifications:

    Education / Experience / License and Certifications:

  • Current Wyoming Registered Nurse Licensure without restrictions.

  • Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience, required.

  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience, required.

  • BSN or equivalent experience required, Master's degree in Nursing or related field preferred.

  • Minimum of five years OR experience and a minimum of three years OR management/supervisor experience.

  • Previous demonstrated leadership, managerial ability and application of good interpersonal relationships and principles of supervision and administration required.

  • Must have effective problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, the ability to interact professionally and communicate appropriately and clearly with physicians.

  • Must have Excellent Customer Service Skills.

  • BLS certification, required

  • Specialty certification in related area, preferred.

  • Descalation training certification within 1 year of position start date, required.

  • ACLS certification within 1 year of position start date, required.

  • CNOR certification, preferred.

  • Additional Skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing

  • Strong written and verbal skills

  • Additional languages preferred

  • Basic computer knowledge

  • Demonstrates leadership, managerial ability, and application of good interpersonal relationships and principles of supervision and administration

  • Strong assessment and prioritization/ organizational skills

    Specific demands not listed: Possible exposure to blood and or body fluids / infectious disease / hazardous waste requiring the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Exposure to odorous chemicals / specimens and Latex products.
