Summary About the Position: Serves as the only senior staff level Geologist in the District. Responsible for the regional interface, complex large-scaled projects, and mentoring of others on all geological engineering issues and projects within the district's programs, studies, and projects. Responsibilities Serve as technical expert in geological investigations and analysis of subsurface data. Provide technical leadership and guidance in the theoretical and practical geology aspects of design, construction and remediation of both flood risk management and navigation projects. Serve as a technical expert in dam safety as the geologist leading periodic assessments and provide mentoring to others. Provide technical leadership and guidance on quantifying the risk associated with geologic and/or geotechnical features of large-scaled projects or Mega Projects. Serve as liaison to the Branch Chief, Section Chief, and the District's Dam and Levee Safety Program Managers. Consider/utilize new and continuing, state-of-the-art advances in the field of engineering geology to characterize, design, construct and remediate both new and existing structures. Develop new procedures to address unique conditions and works with other entities to apply them Corps-wide. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Geologist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography; OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: Acceptable experience may have been gained through geological field or laboratory work that provided a means of obtaining professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of geology and closely related sciences, e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrology. Such work generally must have involved making close observations, taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling geologic data from source materials, and analyzing and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some situations, professional scientific experience in other fields may be accepted in part as professional geological experience. Such experience must have been preceded by appropriate education in geology or by professional geological experience, and must have contributed directly and significantly to the applicant's professional geological competence. To receive credit for geological experience obtained in positions that are not full-time professional geological positions, the applicant is responsible for indicating clearly the actual time or percentage of time devoted to geologic duties within such positions, and for giving adequate descriptions of the geologic functions.)In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have: A. One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) producing geologic documentation for reports, reconnaissance, survey, site selection, construction, foundation, and inspections, 2) developing study plans, conducting literature searches, compiling data, analyzing, organizing, and interpreting information, 3) directing investigations to define ground water conditions and determine subsurface conditions, 4)utilizing rock mechanics data to evaluate tunneling feasibility and determine drillability, 5) conducting special study formulation and evaluation of rock mechanics analysis and geologic conditions associated with mining, navigation, and hydropower permits, and 6) demonstrating high level skills in communicating geologic concerns, lessons learned, etc. through briefing, presentations, and expressed knowledge. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). OR B. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Design Geology Project Management Risk Management Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12). Education FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
